Xperi, DTS: AM/FM Tops for Drivers’ Tastes

AM/FM radio still rules the vehicle interior, according to new DTS consumer survey data from over 2,900 U.S. car owners and car leasers. It is where consumers go for their number one entertainment choice: music, which the majority rank as ‘essential’ to their driving experience.

AM/FM radio is also where most go for their second most popular in-vehicle entertainment choice: local news and information.

This is especially important because consumers are not giving up their vehicle any time soon.

Here are some key findings from DTS, a global provider of next-generation audio, imaging and sensing technology and a wholly owned subsidiary of Xperi Inc.:

• AM/FM Radio is the most used feature in-vehicle, far outpacing satellite radio and Apple CarPlay – 72 percent use AM/FM radio versus 14 percent using Apple CarPlay.
• Of those who listen to audio in the car, 81 percent say music is primarily what they listen to.
• Eighty-nine percent say listening to music is essential to the driving experience.
• Of those who listen to music in the car, 70 percent source it from AM/FM radio.
• Eighty-seven percent get local news and information from AM/FM Radio.

Xperi executives will be at the 2023 NAB Show in Las Vegas with more information on this data, and to offer briefings and demos of the company’s connected car radio technologies, including: DTS AutoStage, the only global automotive independent media delivery platform and it’s recently launched Broadcaster Portal — giving radio broadcasters access to data on listener engagement; and HD Radio, the most successfully deployed commercial digital radio system worldwide.
