Technology Goddesses Seeks WiTH Volunteers

Technology Goddesses, a San Diego-based nonprofit that works to reduce the disparity between women and men in STEM, is seeking volunteers from the Women in Technology Hollywood (WiTH) community for a variety of roles, including mentors, camp volunteers, and more.

Founded by Cora Carmody, the group aims to help girls acquire technology skills in a collaborative fashion, while helping to spark and sustain their interest through the years; to sustain interest and involvement in technology from an early age, starting with preschoolers at camp; to communicate the societal value of technology; to imbue a sense of belonging and technical confidence, regardless of gender identity; and to convey the richness, variety, and fulfillment of careers in technology.

For more than 20 years the Technology Goddesses program of technologies has evolved with the times. 2024 will be the fifth year the group is offering a Deaf Education and Awareness Patch and the fourth year it’s offering an Artificial Intelligence Patch.

“We have always commingled arts and crafts with multi-media, web development, open-source based graphic design, office applications, geocaching, and other activities like outdoor skills, leadership and engagement,” the group said in a statement.

The group’s Technology Goddesses Day Camp has been a San Diego Girl Scout Day Camp since 2005, among the oldest continuously run STEAM programs in existence. Technology Goddesses hosts campers from kindergarten through high school as well as preschoolers and sons of our volunteers.

Ready to volunteer?

There are many ways for WiTH members can get involved:

Share your story: Technology Goddesses will write up a summary from answers to a questionnaire, approved by you, shared on its web sites and social media. You would share your background, current career, steps to get to that career, if you’ve had a career change and what helped you pivot, etc.

Mentoring: Depending on your interest and availability you may like to work with one of our Goddesses on a 1-1 basis.

Role Model Interview: Participate in an interview conducted by one of the teen Goddesses, recorded for the group’s web sites and https://www.youtube.com/@technology-goddesses, LinkedIn, and other social media. You would review questions, do the interview itself, and review the final edit for approval. This helps showcase a variety of different careers and diverse backgrounds.

Career Panel: Share your story on a virtual and interactive panel with questions from the Goddesses. This was previously done at the group’s day camp in Escondido, Calif. in July/August. Now the group can schedule one virtually from camp or at another date.

Field Trips: Do you have an interesting work place you’d like to share? The group has had field trips (and combined them with Q&A sessions with the people you work with) at places like Oracle, Microsoft, behind the scenes (and then in the audience) at Petco Park and the Teen Choice awards and Sony Pictures Entertainment, to name a few.

Camp volunteers: The group is always looking for adults to help with camp each summer.
